If you are in Chiang Mai  put SIZ on your list of ‘must-visits’. It’s instructive, fun and full of surprises. If you love insects you will need no encouragement; if you hate them you’ll be converted. The work of entomologist Pisuth Ek-Amnuay who has been studying and collecting insects for over 30 years, the zoo is home to thousands of examples of the huge variety of these creatures from around the world. In addition, there are numerous displays where you can watch live insects native to Thailand and stroll round a well-stocked butterfly garden.  If you feel like learning about insects and their way of life, study the numerous charts and exhibits; if you just want to relax, stroll round the butterfly garden, admiring the colourful flowers and the lush vegetation as well as the graceful butterflies, dragonflies and other insects. Stars of the show include the giant walking stick, leaf insects and the orchid mantis. Many insects are reared and you can see them at each stage of their development. There’s a wealth of information on all aspects of insects and the staff are also extremely helpful, especially when you’re trying to locate a stick insect amongst a bunch of twigs. You can buy Mr Pisuth’s throughly researched and attractively presented books on butterflies, beetles and other insects as well as insect related souvenirs at the small shop. Located in the popular Mae Sa valley, the zoo is within easy reach of Chiang Mai. Don’t miss it!

The function of these mud-puddle clubs is not fully understood but it is thought that the water contains dissolved minerals needed by the insects. A few butterflies also develop on certain garden crops and may be pests if the vegetable is considered more desirable than the insects. Most garden insecticides can kill the caterpillar stages of the insects.
